The Klosterplatz is a square on the southern edge of the old town of Görlitz . The name derives from the former Franciscan monastery , the grounds of which extended roughly over the entire square today. However, the name has only existed since 1855.

location

As mentioned at the beginning, the square is located on the southern edge of Görlitz's old town and surrounds the Augustum grammar school in a U-shape . On the north side is the Obermarkt with the Dreifaltigkeitskirche , the former monastery church of the Franciscan monastery. The Klosterplatz forms the traffic axis between Obermarkt and Elisabethstrasse to the south . Nonnenstrasse joins the square from the west and Fischmarktstrasse from the east.

On the northeastern part of the monastery square there is a pedestrian connection under the Schwibbogen to the eastern part of the Obermarkt at the confluence of the Brüderstraße .

Development and space design

Three oaks

The Drei Eichen house is the corner house on the east side of the square on the street leading to the fish market - today Fischmarktstrasse 5. The name first appeared in the 15th century and was then one of the numerous breweries in the city. At that time there was a large orchard behind the house.

However, the original corner house was almost completely destroyed in a fire on July 30, 1817. The Köthener Johann Gottlob Ludwig Weider had the house rebuilt in 1818 and took over at the new building, the baroque portal with the keystone together with the thereon crest. The right coat of arms with the sow shows that of the Beyer family. The country doctor Dr. Johann Beyer had owned the house since 1675. Above the coat of arms is a sandstone image of the three oaks and the inscription "Under the oaks, burned down on July 30, 1817, built in 1818 by JGL Weider".

Augustum grammar school / monastery

The Augustum grammar school

The Franciscan monastery was located at the current location of the Augustum grammar school in the middle of the square until the middle of the 19th century. It belonged to the Saxon Franciscan Province and was dissolved as a result of the Reformation in the 16th century. Since 1565, the monastery premises were used as classrooms and living quarters for the teaching staff. At the beginning of the 19th century, the structure of the old monastery walls was in such a poor condition that the first considerations were made to replace the monastery with a new building. Between 1836 and 1853, a wide variety of plans were submitted that provided for a new building or preservation of the old monastery and experts were also heard to inspect the old structure. Among others, master builder Karl Friedrich Schinkel in 1837 and the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV in 1844 visited the old monastery walls. Ultimately, the decision was made to completely rebuild the school on the site of the monastery. After the monastery had been demolished, the foundation stone for today's high school was laid on August 28, 1854. The building was inaugurated about two years later on October 15, 1856.

After the fall of the Wall, it was again possible to take the Abitur at the school since 1992/1993. During the GDR era, there was only the possibility of obtaining the general university entrance qualification at the extended secondary school "Joliot-Curie" on Wilhelmsplatz. In 2004, the previously independent Augustum was merged with the Annenschule grammar school and has since been one of two buildings belonging to the Augustum-Annen grammar school .

Reveler couple

The couple

The couple is a fountain on the east side of the square. It was created by Gisela Mauermann from Görlitz and set up in 1999. A woman is sitting at the edge of the fountain, busy with laundry, and opposite her is a man with a beer mug in his hand. He pours the contents of the bottle over his upper body. The granite stone hut that forms the edge of the fountain comes from the Görlitz inventory and was probably a horse trough in the past.
