The fish market is a place on the southern edge of the historic old town of Görlitz . Compared to the two other large city squares in the old town, the Untermarkt and Obermarkt , it is one of the more recent streets in the historic city center.
The square got its name because herring sales were moved here from the northern part of the Lower Market in the 18th century . Today's image of the square is determined by the two dominating school buildings on the east and south sides and three large trees in the middle of the square. At the end of May and beginning of June, the open-air events of the Jazz Days take place on the square every year.
location
Coming from the west of Klosterplatz , Fischmarktstrasse leads to the fish market, which opens up in a triangular shape to the east. From the north the Schwarze Straße and from the south a lane (once called Stockgässel ) from the Elisabethstraße joins the square. To the east, Bäckerstraße leads north and Krischelstraße south past the music school building onto Weberstraße.
history
The fish market only got its name in 1767 with the relocation of the herring market from the north side of the lower market near the Ratsapotheke to this place. Until the city fire on September 5, 1759, when the whole of Bäckerstrasse and half of Krischelstrasse as well as the rear houses of Brüderstrasse 8, 9 and 10, which faced today's square, burned down, today's square was built on.
The houses Fischmarkt 2 to 5 were once back houses on the Brüderstraße, whereas the corner house Fischmarkt 1 (at the same time Schwarze Straße 8) has appeared as an independent house in the floor books since the summer of 1577. At that time it belonged to Hans Sachse, a member of the rifle guild. The building at the fork between Bäckerstrasse and Krischelstrasse - the former community school V was only built in the years 1836 to 1838. Before that, the shoe store had stood at this point since 1759, which was built on what was then a desolate place. The shoe store was a one-story brick framework with a shingle roof . In 1836 the shoemakers were sent to the salt house on the Obermarkt. The school house has been used by the music school since the middle of the 20th century .
The Fischmarkt 8 adjoins the south side of the square. These were once two houses that were merged in 1840. Between 1618 and 1780 the master linen weavers guild was located in the western of the two houses. Three houses further is the magnificent community school VI (Fischmarkt 11), which today houses the downtown elementary school. The municipal magistrate decided to build the school building in 1895 and after the demolition of the houses at Fischmarkt 11 to 15, the foundation stone was laid in 1896. At number 15 there was once an extensive brewery, which the city acquired in 1865 for 24,000 thalers. The demolition survived the portal, lintel, fighter and gusset. They were used in 1902 for the entrance to the New Town Hall at Jüdenstrasse 1.
The school building was designed by the government master builder Paul Schröder, while the Görlitz architect Adalbert Rothenburger was responsible for the execution. On October 25, 1897, the school began teaching with 17 classes. The schoolhouse is modeled on the Renaissance style. In the escape to Schwarzen Straße there is a passage to Elisabethstraße past the school yard, in which the bronze figure group Kistenkinder by Peter Fritzsche is located. The old Görlitz coat of arms can be seen between the two portals of the passage, above the middle pillar of the passage.
Behind the houses at Fischmarkt 10 to 14 there was once the bailiff that reached up to the city wall . It was first mentioned in 1377, usually called the Stockhaus , and served as a prison. Between 1589 and 1601 it also offered the town executioner a home until he was referred to the executioner's house at Finstertor in the Nikolaivorstadt in 1601 . In 1822 the municipal magistrate left the bailiffs to the royal Prussian inquisitorial, but remained the owner of the house. The judicial authorities only bought the Fischmarkt 14 building and later left it to the city in exchange for 2½ acres of land on Postplatz for the construction of a new courthouse. The Elisabeth School was first built in 1875 on the site of the former bailiff.
