Kalervo Toivonen

Kaarlo Kalervo Toivonen (born January 22, 1913 in Salo , † July 25, 2006 in Turku ) was a Finnish javelin thrower who was successful around the mid-1930s.

He had his only international appearance at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin , where he won bronze with a 70.72 m. Both Toivonen and his compatriot Yrjö Nikkanen (silver with 70.77 m) and the German surprise winner Gerhard Stöck (gold with 71.74 m) benefited from the fact that world record holder and favorite Matti Järvinen did not have his best day and was below 70 -m mark remained.

In the following years 1937 and 1938 Toivonen achieved season bests of 71.05 and 71.10 m respectively. However , he did not take part in the European Championships in Paris in 1938 . He threw his best distance of 71.39 m in 1939. At Finnish national championships he took third place in the javelin throw from 1936 to 1938 and 1943. In the pentathlon he finished second in 1936.

The trained sports teacher was part of the Belgian coaching staff at the 1948 Olympic Games and looked after Gaston Reiff and Étienne Gailly , among others .
