The California Nutmeg ( Torreya californica ) is a plant from the genus of Torreya ( Torreya ) in the family of yew plants (Taxaceae).
description
Vegetative characteristics
The Californian nut wedge is an evergreen tree that reaches heights of 10 to 30 meters and a trunk diameter of up to 1 meter. The bark is gray-brown with fine cracks. The needles are 3 to 8 inches long and end in a sharp point.
Generative characteristics
The Californian nut slice is dioeciously segregated ( diocesan ). The male cone is whitish. The seed coat ( arillus ) is plum-like and green with purple stripes. The aril surrounds a large brown seed , both together are 2.5 to 3.5 centimeters long.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 16.
Occurrence
This rare endemic thrives in running waters in the mountains, on sheltered slopes, damp canyons in the coastal mountains and the Sierra Nevada , at altitudes from 0 to 2000 meters in California .
Systematics
The first description of Torreya californica was made in 1852 by John Torrey in the magazine New York Journal of Pharmacy , Volume 3, page 49. synonyms for Torreya californica Torr. are: Tumion californicum (Torr.) Greene , Torreya myristica Hook. The specific epithet californica refers to the origin from California.
