Kalinga was a kingdom in eastern central India , which roughly encompassed the area of ​​today's Odisha and the northern parts of the adjoining Andhra Pradesh . The largest city in the Kalingas area was Sisupalgarh . It was a fertile area that stretched west from Damodar to Godavari and the Bay of Bengal . The capital of the kingdom was Toshali .

In this area, Ashoka ruled around 261 BC. Chr. The Kalingakrieg . Kalinga is mentioned in the Mahabharata .

The Kalinga script goes back to the Brahmi script and developed further to the Oriya script , which originated around 1000. Because of the close connection to the Brahmi script, this is the one within the Indian group of writings that comes closest to the Brahmi script.
