Kalkburg

The Kalkburg is an abandoned hilltop castle near Hörden am Harz in the district of Göttingen in Lower Saxony .

location

The Burgstall is located about 1.1 km northeast of Hörden , about 3.5 km northwest of Herzberg am Harz and about 300 m southwest of the small settlement Aschenhütte , on the 244 m high local mountain , not far from where the Kleine Steinau joins the Sieber . Today only the remainder of a ring wall with a diameter of about 80 m reminds of the Kalkburg. On the east side, parts of the ring wall have been removed by a quarry. The hilltop is forested with beeches.

About 150 m north of the Kalkburg is the Aschenhütte pond , also known as the Schwarzer Pfuhl .

history

The Kalkburg was built by Duke Wilhelm II of Braunschweig-Lüneburg and was first mentioned in 1337 as Nyge Hos (New House). Since it was no longer mentioned after 1359, it was soon abandoned in favor of Herzberg Castle .
