The Kalmsche Haus , also known as von Kalmsches Haus , in Braunschweiger Wilhelmstrasse 95 was built in 1619 in the Renaissance style. The imposing patrician house was destroyed during the Second World War and not rebuilt.

history

In 1619 the mayor Werner Kalm had a large patrician house built in the Weichbild Hagen on the corner of the Abelnkarre . According to Paul Jonas Meier, the builder of the house was possibly Ulrich Stamm († 1633), as the Kalmsche House had similar features to the Achtermannsche Haus in Braunschweig, which was created by Stamm . The building came into the possession of the von Damm family from Brunswick through marriage in 1699, who sold it to the city in 1828. The building was used as a girls 'citizens' school from 1830 and renovated in 1857. The building was destroyed during the Second World War. Only the Renaissance portal has been preserved, which was rebuilt on Reichsstrasse 15 as a passage to Opfertwete .

description

The building had a two-story stone front wall with a width of 25 spans, on which a half-timbered floor was placed. The richly decorated portal bore a coat of arms with the Kalm coat of arms flanked by two halberd bearers. This was later replaced by the city coat of arms with the walking lion, which can still be seen today. In the interior there was a wooden pillar in the large hall, to which metal plates with the water levels of two historical floods of September 2, 1641 and April 10, 1808 were attached.
