Kalnciems (German: Kalnzeem ) is a place in Latvia , about 49 km southwest of Riga on the banks of the Lielupe .
The place name has been documented since the 16th century, but the place at that time was on the other bank of the river. Until 2010 Kalnciems had city rights.
Ernst Johann von Biron (1690–1772), Duke of Courland and Semigallia , was born here.
