Kalzhofen is part of Oberstaufen in the Oberallgäu district .

history

The village of Kalzhofen, which traces its name and probably also the first settlement back to the Chadolt mentioned in 868, is mentioned for the first time in a luge of the monastery Mehrerau from 1340 as "Kadoltzhoven".

The field name “Meerau” for a forest section and for a pasture area still reminds us of the Mehrerau monastery property and the manorial rule of the monastery in Kalzhofen.

In 1632 Kalzhofen had 52 communicants, in 1640 only 41 and 1644 still 37. Field names such as Mühlacker, Mühlanger, Mühlberg and Mühlbergholz are reminiscent of the existence of a former mill in Kalzhofen. Today's street names are named after the various old field names, for example there is Meerau, Kreuzwiesenweg or Orthalde.

The mother Balbina Hauber of the famous historian and politician Edmund Jörg came from a farm in Kalzhofen .

On January 3, 1905, the sisters of the Dillingen Franciscan monastery opened the St. Immakulata orphanage in Kalzhofen , which goes back to a foundation of the single Hauber siblings and their cousin Xaver Arzet and is now a children's home. The Lourdes grotto created there was a place of pilgrimage for a long time.

For centuries Kalzhofen was a farmers' village. Today the place is a residential area, which is dominated by agriculture and tourism. There are still some farms as well as several hotels and a number of holiday apartments and guest houses.

Events

One event is the annual village festival that takes place in August and is organized by the "Kalzhofer Kranzern". The traditional bonfire is also organized by the wreaths on Spark Sunday on Hompessenalpweg and a carnival wreath in January in the gym of the Montessori school.
