Mairie Auxon

Auxon , even Auxon-lès-Vesoul called, is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Auxon is located at an altitude of 238 m above sea level, about seven kilometers north of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the central part of the department, in the north of the Vesoul basin, on the Ruisseau des Fourches in the valley of the Bâtard.

The area of the 12.51 km² large municipal area includes a section in the area of the Vesoul basin. The southern part of the area is taken up by the wide valley of the Bâtard, which averages 230 m. It is approximately 1.5 kilometers wide and is mainly used for agriculture. Below Auxon, the Bâtard takes on the village stream Ruisseau des Fourches from the right and drains the area south to the Durgeon . In the southeast the border is marked by the forest height of the Bois la Dame (285 m).

The terrain rises gradually towards the northwest. The plateau is subdivided by the lowland of the Ruisseau des Fourches and its side streams. In the north, the municipality extends into the extensive forest area of the Bois d'Auxon , in which the highest point of Auxon is reached at 339 m. From a geological and tectonic point of view, the terrain consists of alternating layers of sandy-marly and calcareous sediments from the lower Jurassic period .

In addition to the actual village, Auxon includes several hamlets and farms:

  • Gressoux (302 m) on the plateau on the southern edge of the Bois d'Auxon
  • La Postey (277 m) on the western slope of the Ruisseau des Fourches on the southern edge of the Bois d'Auxon

Neighboring municipalities of Auxon are Provenchère and Breurey-lès-Faverney in the north, Flagy in the east, Villeparois and Pusy-et-Épenoux in the south and Bougnon in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages Auxon belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . The Archbishop of Besançon placed the church of Auxon under the priory of Saint-Nicolas du Marteroy in Vesoul in 1216. The village formed the center of a small lordship that became dependent on the Neuchâtel family in the 15th century. Together with Franche-Comté , Auxon finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. The area changed in 1807 when Gressoux (1806: 113 inhabitants) was incorporated into Auxon. Today Auxon is a member of the community association Communauté de communes Agir Ensemble, which comprises 13 localities .

Attractions

The village church of Saint-André in Auxon was rebuilt in the 19th century. Close to the church is a 16th century mansion with a round tower. Also worth seeing are the Château de Saramboz, the Hermitage Saint-Laurent, a former chapel from the 16th and 17th centuries and the covered lavoir, which once served as a wash house and cattle trough. There is another castle in Gressoux.

With 419 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Auxon is one of the smaller municipalities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (449 people were still counted in 1886), population growth has been recorded again since the beginning of the 1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Auxon was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Today there are some local small businesses, including a metal construction company. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the Vesoul agglomeration.

The place is located off the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Vesoul to Conflans-sur-Lanterne . Another road connection is with Bougnon.
