Kambia is a city in Sierra Leone . It is the capital of the eponymous district of Kambia in Magbema -chiefdom in the province of North West .
The place is near the border with Guinea on the river Great Scarcies (also called Kolente).
City name
The name of the town comes from Pa Kambi , a local fisherman. He settled on the Kolente before the discovery of Sierra Leone by the Portuguese. Kambia, which means "the city of Pa Kambi", was named after him.
population
The population consists mainly of members of the Susu and Temne . In 1963 the village had 3700 inhabitants, then it grew to 5740 in 1974 and 7631 in 1985. At the last census in 2004, there were 11842 inhabitants in Kambia.
economy
There is no big deal. The population lives from their own production. Kambia has a small airfield.
