Kamissa Camara (* 1983 in Grenoble ) is a Malian political scientist and politician. She was the country's foreign minister in 2018 and 2019 and has been Mali's minister for digital economy and planning since 2019.

Life

Camara was born in Grenoble to Malian parents who emigrated to France in the 1970s.

Camara holds a bachelor's degree in applied foreign languages ​​from the University of Paris VII and a master's degree in international economics and development from the University of Pierre Mendès-France Grenoble II . In 2005 she completed an internship at the United Nations in Washington and spent a year as an au pair in Concord, New Hampshire . In 2007 she completed an internship at the African Development Bank in Tunisia before receiving a green card and moving to the United States, where she lived for eight years.

From 2007 Camara worked at the International Foundation for Electoral Systems in West Africa and was one of the observers of the 2013 Malian presidential election in Timbuktu. She moved to the National Endowment for Democracy in 2012 , where she was promoted to Vice Director for Central and West Africa in 2016. She also worked with US presidential candidate Hillary Clinton for a while .

Camara was a member of the Center for African Studies at Harvard University until December 2017 . She was also the director for sub-Saharan Africa at the NGO PartnersGlobal until June 2018 . She has written opinion articles and political analysis for various publications in English and French and has been a political commentator for English and French television programs. She was the first Malian political scientist to appear on CNN .

Camara is the founder and co-chair of the Sahel Strategy Forum. In 2017, she wrote a letter to Mali's President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta , asking him to withdraw his plans to amend the constitution. In July 2018, he appointed her his diplomatic advisor. On September 9, 2018, she was appointed Foreign Minister by Keïta, the second woman in Mali and the youngest person to hold this post. This made her one of eleven women in the cabinet with 32 members. She spoke about regional security issues and alleged human rights violations. When she gave a speech at the United Nations General Assembly in Marrakech in December 2018 , in which she regretted the withdrawal of some countries from the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration , she was the youngest foreign minister in the world at the age of 35.
