from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kampong Sungai Duhon is a place in the Belait district of Brunei . The settlement lies on the east bank of the Sungai Belait River . The Kuala Belait shipyard is also located there .

geography

Kampong Sungai Duhon is located south of the city of Kuala Belait in Mukim of the same name .

The settlement is bordered by the Jalan Singa Menteri and Kuala Belait in the north, the Sungai Belait in the west and south and the feeder of the Jalan Pandan Lima to the Seria Bypass , as well as the suburb of Kampong Mumong in the east. The Rasau area is on the opposite bank of the Sungai Belait in the west. The settlement merges seamlessly into the urban area of Kuala Belait in the north. The bank of the Sungai Belait is characterized by shipyards and factories.

history

Kampong Sungai Duhon was founded in the 1960s as a settlement by land occupiers. Workers settled there who worked in the city of Kuala Belait and in the nearby Marine Construction Yard of Brunei Shell Petroleum .

The restructuring of Kuala Belait in the 1980s and 1990s also brought the settlement a building boom. The Public Works Department (JKR) Kuala Belait Offices was relocated to the settlement in the early 1990s. An area in the east was opened up for the construction of social housing around the same time and an area in the east was rededicated as the Kuala Belait Light Industrial Area in the 1990s. The construction of the Kuala Belait Port near Kampong Sungai Tujoh began around the turn of the millennium.

Kampong Sungai Duhon experienced a further boom at the end of the 20th century when a bridge was built over the Sungai Belait, which enabled a passage to Rasau and on to Miri in Sarawak , Malaysia without having to use a ferry. This bridge was only opened after a family from Malaysia drowned at the ferry terminal during heavy rain.

oil and gas

Brunei Shell Petroleum's Marine Construction Yard , operated by the Services Campaign Operations Department , is located in the northwest corner of the settlement between Jalan Singa Menteri and Sungai Belait. In the vicinity of the shipyard there are also some Rasau Field oil production facilities, through which oil and gas is produced from the opposite side of the Sungai Belait in Rasau.

traffic

Jalan Singa Menteri Road connects Kuala Belait with Seria and is the only paved two-lane road in the settlement. The roads to the industrial area are also paved. There are bus connections to Kuala Belait and Seria. The Rasau Bypass (the extension of the Seria Bypass) and the east end of the Rasau Bridge run through the southern, undeveloped part of the settlement. The Rasau Bridge over the Sungai Belait is a toll bridge.

The port of Kuala Belait is one of two in Brunei. The other port is at the opposite (eastern) end of the country in Muara . Part of the port is operated by the Brunei Shell and is not open to the public. Due to the mud deposits in the river mouth, the port can only be approached by shallow vehicles. Two piers / breakwaters were built to counteract the silting up, but dredging still has to be done regularly.

education

There is only one school in the settlement, the Sekolah Agama Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin (Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Religious School) at the Jalan Singa Menteri between the shipyard and the Public Works Department (JKR) main Kuala Belait office.
