Belait

Rasau is a place name in Brunei . The area with the Rasau Field ( oil field ) was named after a small village, Kampong Rasau , which today only has about 100 inhabitants.

geography

Rasau is located in the Belait district on the west bank of the Belait River , south of Kampong Sungai Teraban , near the main town of Kuala Belait and belongs to the Mukim Kuala Belait . The Malaysian state of Sarawak joins in the west and the Malaysian Asam Paya Oil Field to the southwest . On the opposite bank of the Belait River are the southern suburbs of Kuala Belait and Kampong Sungai Duhon .

Kampong Rasau

The village of Kampong Rasau itself is south of the Rasau Bridge . Originally only farmers, fishermen and hunters lived there.

Today the place serves as the suburb of Kuala Belait. Villagers are given permission to cross the bridge without a bridge toll so they can get to Kuala Belait for work. A shipyard at Kampong Sungai Duhon in Rasau is an important employer for the villagers and far beyond.

history

Rasau used to be one of the first stops along the Belait River on the way from the sea to the administrative center of Kuala Belait. The place was so far inland to ensure some protection against pirates.

Petroleum deposits were only discovered in Rasau in 1979 and production began in 1983. A blowout at one of the oil wells, Rasau-17, occurred in April 1989. The fire burned from April 25th to May 8th until it could finally be stopped.

Rasau gained in importance in the second half of the 20th century when a bridge was built to connect it across the Belait River to Miri in Sarawak, Malaysia. Since then, travelers have no longer been dependent on ferry traffic on the Belait River. The bridge was only opened after a Malaysian family drowned at the ferry terminal during heavy rain.

oil and gas

Rasau is shaped by the Rasau Field, one of two oil fields in the interior of Brunei. The field is cultivated by Brunei Shell Petroleum . Most of the springs are located near the highway that connects the Rasau Bridge with Sungai Tujoh in the Rasau area. Some springs are also east of the Belait River in Kampong Sungai Duhon and Kampong Pandan .

Pipelines connect the production stations with the tank farms in Seria via Mumong and the refineries in Seria via Kuala Belait.

Oil and gas are also pumped in from Malaysia's Asam Paya Field in Sarawak via Rasau to Brunei.

traffic

The highway from Bandar Seri Begawan to the Malaysian border runs through Rasau. The road is single-lane and paved. It also connects the Seria Bypass and the Rasau Bridge to the road between Kampong Sungai Teraban and Sungai Tujoh.

The Rasau Bridge is a toll bridge.

There is also the possibility of a "water taxi" (boat connection) from the pier at Kuala Belait Market along the river to Kampong Rasau and Kuala Balai. The closest airport is in Bandar Seri Begawan or Miri.
