Location of Sungai Tujoh in Mukim Belait

Sungai Tujoh (also: Sg. Tujoh ) is the westernmost point of Brunei . The area is in the (daerah) Belait district .

Surname

The name comes from two Malay words: Sungai (river) and Tujoh (Tujuh = 7), translated: Seventh River .

Occasionally there is talk of Kampong Sungai Tujoh , but there is no permanent settlement in the area. There is a customs, export and immigration post in Sungai Tujoh where 46 immigration officers are stationed, as well as a police post to monitor the border with Malaysia .

geography

Sungai Tujoh consists of a narrow strip of land on the coast of the South China Sea in Belait District. On the opposite bank of the river is Kampong Rentis in the Malaysian state of Sarawak . The Malaysian border extends south and west along the Sungai Tujoh River and to the east joins the area of Kampong Sungai Tiga (Sungai Enam) in Brunei.

The border post is one of four border crossings between Brunei and Sarawak and the only one in the Belait district. The other three are Kuala Lurah ( Brunei-Muara to Limbang ), Bangar (Temburong) (Puni), and Labu ( Temburong to Limbang and Lawas / Terusan).

history

Sungai Tujoh was split up in 1882 when Sultan Abdul Momin ceded the area in the Baram basin to the White Rajas of Sarawak. The area covered 30,000 square kilometers (10,000 sqmi ), against an annual payment of 6,000 dollars .

The border was set in 1958 by the British , who at the time ruled the colony of Sarawak and also had responsibility for the international relations of the Protectorate of Brunei. An Immigration Post was built in the 1960s and has been continuously expanded since then. The most recent extensions were made on the occasion of the inauguration of the ASEAN Bridge over the Sungai Baram .

traffic

The main roads between the ferry connection to the Malaysian border and the Rasau Bridge are paved.

There is a regular bus transfer from Kuala Belait to the Sungai Tujoh border post, as well as another connection from the border post to Miri in Malaysia.
