Abdul Momin ( Arabic عبد المؤمن; born before May 21, 1788; died May 30, 1885 ) was the 24th Sultan of Brunei from 1852 until his death on May 29, 1885. He was the son-in-law of his predecessor, Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin II.

Reign

Abdul Momin took over the government from his father-in-law Omar Ali Saifuddin II when the Sultan was ill. After his death he was crowned sultan. During his reign the spread of Islam was promoted and the sultan himself sent ʿUlamā ' to Mecca . He was popular as a sultan because he brought peace and order to the country.

Loss of land

During his reign, however, large areas were also transferred to James Brooke of Sarawak ; In 1855 seven districts from Samarahan to Rajang were contractually assigned to James Brooke. On November 26, 1856, the British signed a treaty with Sultan Abdul Momin to reinforce the Treaty of Friendship and Commerce of 1847. In 1861, Abdul Momin gave more territory to James Brooke.

At the same time, between 1865 and 1878, three other foreign powers invaded northern Borneo ( Sabah ). In 1865, Charles Lee Moses , an American Consul General, signed a treaty with the Sultan that gave him power over twenty-one districts. Moses later sold his rights to Joseph Wilfred Torrey , who in turn passed them on to Gustavus Baron von Overbeck . In 1881 the British government issued a Royal Charter for the British North Borneo Company . William Hood Treacher became the first British Governor of North Borneo .

Amanat declaration

When the Sultan realized that Brunei should be partitioned, he declared to the Amanat , an agreement between the Sultan, the Wazirs , Manteris and holders of the Tulin rights , that no territories should be ceded or leased to foreign powers. In the following years, many territories in Brunei were stolen, including Limbang . Brunei simply didn't have the military strength to enforce the Amanat.
