Omar Ali Saifuddin I ( Jawi : I عمر علي سيف الدين; born February 3, 1711; died July 10, 1795) was the eighteenth Sultan of Brunei according to official counts . He ruled from 1740 until his abdication in favor of his eldest son Muhammad Tajuddin in 1778.

Life

Omar Ali Saifuddin was the son of Sultan Muhammad Alauddin Ibni Al Marhum Pengiran Di-Gadong Pengiran Muda Shah Mubin and his wife Pengiran Anak Sharbanun binti Pengiran Bendahara Pengiran Untong .

Succession to the throne

After the abdication of Sultan Hussin Kamaluddin , Pengiran Muda Omar Ali Saifuddin was made Sultan of Brunei. According to Sir Hugh Low's account , the new sultan was very young when he came to the throne.

government

During his reign he tried to promote peace and prosperity in Brunei. The British Thomas Forrest visited Brunei in February 1776. However, there were also military conflicts during his time. In 1769 the Sultan dispatched troops led by Pehin Orang Kaya Di-Gadong Seri Lela Awang Aliwaddin to attack Manila . His army defeated the Spaniards in Manila and took some prisoners.

Datuk Teting, a soldier from Sulu who defeated the British forces at Balambangan in 1774, also attempted to conquer Brunei, but was repulsed by the Sultan's uncle, Pengiran Temenggong Ampa , in 1775.

The sultan abdicated in 1778 in favor of his eldest son Muhammad Tajuddin .

The Sultan died on July 10, 1795, during the reign of his son Muhammad Tajuddin. He was buried in Kubah Makam Di Raja in Bandar Seri Begawan . He was the first sultan to be buried there. After his death, he received the title of Marhum Makam Besar .
