Muhammad Alauddin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Muhammad Alauddin ( Arabic محمد علاء الدين) was the seventeenth Sultan of Brunei by official census . He ruled from 1730 until his death in 1737. He was the father of Omar Ali Saifuddin I , the 18th Sultan of Brunei.

Life

origin

Muhammad Alauddin was the son of Pengiran Di-Gadong Shahmubin , the son of Sultan Muhyiddin, and Pengiran Anak Besar , the daughter of Pengiran Muda Besar Abdullah, the eldest son of Abdul Jalilul Akbar .

Reign

The Sultan commissioned Datu Imam Yaakub to compile the Salasilah Sultan-Sultan Brunei (Genealogy of the Sultans of Brunei). The genealogical data were used by Khatib Haji Abdul Latif in the drafting of Batu Tarsilah , which was written during the reign of Muhammad Tajuddin . To date, the Batu Tarsilah is the main historical source for the history of Brunei. During the reign of Muhammad Alauddin there were also various encounters with Spaniards , which at that time spread to the Philippines .

death

Muhammad Alauddin died in 1737. His successor was Hussin Kamaluddin , who took over the rule a second time, until Muhammad's son, Omar Ali Saifuddin I , finally took power in 1740.

Spanish reports

Spanish records report contacts with the Sultan of Brunei, "Muhammad Alauddin", in 1682. A "Spanish-Bruneian Treaty" was signed in 1685, in which the Sultan is named as Sultan Mahamat Alaodin Rey de la isla de Borney . The contract allowed the Spaniards to send Chinese traders to Brunei. Brunei also promised the Spaniards assistance in suppressing the Sama-Bajau , who threatened Spanish possessions in the Philippines.

The Spanish sources report that the Sultan Muhammad Alauddin had no legitimate heirs and describe the Pengiran Bendahara as a capable and energetic man. The Pengiran Bendahara was the first in line to the throne.

The Spanish records therefore differ greatly from the Bruneian sources.
