Martin Sihle

Martin Sihle ( Latvian Mārtiņš Zīle ) (born January 28, 1863 in Ungurpilī ; † May 12, 1945 in Unsleben ) was a Latvian internist .

Zīle was the younger brother of the conductor Indriķis Zīle . He studied medicine at the University of Dorpat as well as in Berlin and Vienna . In 1889 he published his doctoral thesis on aspects of colon cancer in German in Dorpat . From 1890 he worked outside Latvia. First in Fellin , then in Yalta , Sevastopol and from 1898 in Odessa , where he worked as a university lecturer and from 1920 as a professor. In 1922, however, he returned to Latvia and worked at the University of Latvia in Riga . He played an important role in establishing the university's medical faculty, of which he was dean from 1923 to 1925. From 1927 to 1929 he was rector of the university. He was also active for the Latvian Medical Association and a Latvian medical organization against tuberculosis .

Zīle has received several awards and was an honorary doctorate from Uppsala University . On Elisabethstrasse ( Elizabetes iela ) in Riga, there has been a plaque commemorating Mārtiņš Zīle on his former home at Elisabethstrasse 63 on the corner of Dorpater Strasse ( Tērbatas iela ) since 1992.
