Muhammad Kanzul Alam

Muhammad Kanzul Alam ( Arabic محمد كنذول عالم) was the 21st Sultan of Brunei . He succeeded his half-brother, Muhammad Tajuddin, to the throne in 1807 and ruled until his abdication in 1826. Before he was proclaimed Sultan, he had been appointed Pengiran Di-Gadong Sahibul Mal , one of the viziers of Brunei . He acted as regent for his half-brother after the untimely death of his nephew and son-in-law, Muhammad Jamalul Alam I , in 1804.

Muhammad Kanzul Alam was the son of Omar Ali Saifuddin I and his wife, Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Putri. He was the half-brother of Muhammad Tajuddin , the 19th Sultan of Brunei, and of Pengiran Shahbandar Pengiran Anak Abdul Wahab , the father of Abdul Momin , the 24th Sultan of Brunei.

His daughter, Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Nuralam , was married to Sultan Muhammad Jamalul Alam I , the 20th Sultan of Brunei. In this way, he was also the maternal grandfather of Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin II.

Reign

During his reign, Brunei Pitis (currency) was introduced for trade in Brunei. He also appointed Prince Pengiran Indera Mahkota Mohammad Salleh as governor of Sarawak . and developed a close relationship with William Farquhar , the first UK resident of Singapore . The correspondence has been partially preserved.

As a diplomatic ruler, he strengthened Brunei's ties with western powers such as Spain and the Netherlands .

He was succeeded by his son, Muhammad Alam .
