Succession to the throne (Brunei)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The succession to the throne in Brunei produces the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam in the line of descent of Sultan Hashim Jalilul Alam Aqamaddin (1885-1906). The succession to the throne is determined by the Council of Succession ( English Council of Succession ; Malay Majlis Mesyuarat Mengangkat Raja Brunei ), whose members are appointed by the ruling sultan. In practice, this is the oldest male descendant of the ruling sultan, conceived and born in wedlock.

Details of the succession to the throne are regulated , among other things, in the constitution of Brunei Darussalam and above all in the Succession and Regency Proclamation from 1959, with the last change in 2011. Usually the oldest male descendant becomes the heir to the throne, followed by the oldest male grandchild, etc. Women and non-Muslims play no role in the line of succession. An earlier generation is preferred to an older one, an heir to the throne whose two parents are from the sultan's bloodline is preferred, as is legitimate children or children of the first wife.

If there are no heirs to the throne in the line of the sultan, royal branches from other Muslim royal houses of the Malays are preferred.
