The canal bridge Le Guétin (fr: Pont-canal du Guétin) is a trough bridge in the French commune of Cuffy belonging place Le Guétin in the department of Cher in the region Loire Center-Val de . On it the Lateral Canal à la Loire crosses the lower Allier River .

history

Since the upper Loire was not without problems for shipping due to its irregular water level, a side canal running parallel to the river was built between 1827 and 1838 . The Canal latéral à la Loire is also the link between the Canal de Briare and the Canal du Center . Inland vessels can travel from the English Channel via Paris and Lyon to the Mediterranean via four consecutive canals .

Under the direction of Jean Joseph Pierre Vigoureux , the engineer Adolphe Jullien built one of the first large canal bridges in France at Le Guétin from 1834 . It was opened to shipping in 1838 at the same time as the opening of the canal. From 1880 to 1890 it was redesigned by Léonce-Abel Mazoyer to adapt it to the dimensions of Freycinet-class ships , increasing the depth of the trough from 1.60 m to 2.20 m.

description

The 343 m long and 9.33 m wide bridge was built from hewn stone from Apremont-sur-Allier , its 18 arches each have a clear width of 16 m at the base. The design largely corresponds to the Digoin canal bridge built at the same time .

The trough is lined on both sides by a towpath . Immediately to the northwest of the bridge are locks No. 21 and 22, which replaced a lock staircase with three chambers when the Mazoyer was renovated . With them a height difference of 9.50 m can be overcome.
