Kansai Yamamoto (Japanese 山 本 寛 斎; born February 8, 1944 in Yokohama ; died July 21, 2020 ) was a Japanese fashion designer and event organizer.

Life

Kansai Yamamoto was assistant to designers Junko Koshino and Hisashi Hosono . In 1967 he was awarded by the Bunka Fukusō Gakuin . In 1971 he opened his own company.

Yamamoto was the first Japanese fashion designer with his own fashion show in London, who also collaborated with David Bowie , Elton John and Stevie Wonder , among others . For David Bowie he designed the stage outfits for his role as the fictional character " Ziggy Stardust ".

As an event producer, he organized the “Kansai Super Show Hello! Russia ”, which took place in 1993 on Red Square in Moscow and attracted around 120,000 spectators. He performed these Kansai supershows in Vietnam (1995) and India (1997), among others. In 2005 he was the producer of the opening event of the World Expo 2005 in the Japanese prefecture of Aichi . His “Nippon Genki Project 2020” takes place posthumously.

The actress Mirai Yamamoto is his daughter and Yusuke Iseya is his half-brother.
