The pulpit rock or the pulpit in Pirmasens is an approximately 8 feet high mushroom rock in the German part of the Wasgau , the southern Pfälzerwald ( Rheinland-Pfalz ). It is located on the Pirmasens district not far from the Ruhbank district . Although it is significantly smaller, the statics of this rock appear just as spectacular as that of the Hinterweidenthaler Teufelstisch .

geography

The rock formation stands at 380  m above sea level. NHN , a few hundred meters east of the Pirmasens district of Ruhbank , at the east end of the Sengelsberg . Follow the Kanzelstrasse to the outskirts and then continue on the slowly sloping ridge until the Kanzel is reached. Even further to the east, on the Lemberg district, is the forest house and excursion restaurant Starkenbrunnen of the Palatinate Forest Association , from where the pulpit is also easy to reach on foot.

geology

The pulpit is a so-called free - standing tower . It owes its name to its shape, with a slender foot wearing a sweeping top, similar to a sermon pulpit that protrudes from a column in a cathedral . This shape was created by erosion , which removes softer layers in the present red sandstone rock more quickly. Overlying harder layers remain. This creates overhangs. Fine vertical cracks in the rock are widened by the action of vegetation and frost until overhangs break down and steep walls arise. Depending on the circumstances, free-standing towers and even mushroom rocks can arise, which is quite typical for the northern Wasgau. However, only a few of these formations are so pronounced. Most of the time, the rock faces simply recede in geological periods, as new overhangs arise and break off again. The traces of such breaks can be seen on the surrounding rock walls and as meter-sized boulders in the forest.
