Architecture and history
It is a massive brick building from the late 19th century.
On May 5, 1890, the foundation stone was laid for the new school building not far from the city prison. The building was designed with the significant participation of the Countess-Stolberg building councilor Messow. The way in which the first three hammer blows for the new building clearly shows the position of the Count's House at that time, because as patron, Count Otto zu Stolberg-Wernigerode made the first hammer blow, followed by his consistorial councilor and only then the mayor and the city authorities.
After only 15 months of construction, the secondary school for girls was inaugurated.
In 1904, the Wernigeroder town planner Deistel planned the extension of the toilet wing that still exists today at this school. The extension had become necessary because at that time the city had a plan to establish a road connection between Marktstrasse and today's Forkestrasse to improve traffic conditions. At that time the Kanzleistrasse was laid out. Now this planned new street should run directly across the courtyard of the secondary school for girls. There, however, the toilet block, which was still outside the school at the time, stood exactly in the way. It was removed without further ado, and City Planning Officer Deistel ensured that the schoolgirls received a modern toilet extension inside the building.
On the occasion of the 70th birthday of the widowed Princess Anna zu Stolberg-Wernigerode in 1907, this school was named Fürstin-Anna-Lyzeum . Today the State High School for Music Wernigerode is located in this yellow-orange brick building .
The house is listed in the local monument register under registration number 094 03239.
