The Cape Dalton marks the southeastern end of a snow-covered island off the west bank of Edward VIII Bay on the coast of the East Antarctic Kemplands . The cape is about 1.5 km north of the Brattodden headland .

Norwegian cartographers mapped this area using aerial photographs taken during the Lars Christensen expedition in 1936/37 . The cape is not mentioned by name on the maps, but is part of the objects named Skutenesmulen (Norwegian for Prahm maul ) and Skutenes (Norwegian for Prahmspitze ). As Skutenes called headland scientists identified as part of the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions (ANARE) as two-covered islands with it and rejected the descriptive Norwegian designation. The Antarctic Names Committee of Australia named the cape described here on February 15, 1958 after Robert Frederick Martin Dalton (1907 – unknown), officer on duty in the ANARE campaign on Macquarie Island in 1953.
