Aerial photographs were taken in 1956 as part of the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions and in 1957 during a Soviet Antarctic expedition . Soviet scientists named the cape after the hydrographer A. I. Gaudis, who died on August 10, 1959 in the crash of a Lissunow Li-2 on the Chukchi Peninsula .
