Aerial photographs were taken in 1956 as part of the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions and during a Soviet Antarctic expedition the following year. The participants in the latter research trip named it after Sergei Evgenjewitsch Monakow, a Soviet polar aviator who died in 1955 in the crash of an Ilyushin Il-12 in Arkhangelsk Oblast .
