Cape Poinsett is an icy cape on the northern foothills of the Budd coast of the East Antarctic Wilkesland . To the west and east of the cape, the coastline drops sharply to the south.
The location of the cape coincides with the seaward end of 1840 in the maps of the United States Exploring Expedition (1838-1842) under Charles Wilkes as Budds's High Land registered coast. The cape was mapped using aerial photographs taken by the United States Navy during Operation Highjump (1946–1947). The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named the Cape in 1955 to the American politician Joel Roberts Poinsett (1779–1851), Secretary of War under US President Martin van Buren and who helped compile and publish the scientific reports of the United States Exploring Expedition (1838–1851). 1842) under the direction of the American polar explorer Charles Wilkes.
