Cape Spieden is a cape on the Banzare coast of the East Antarctic Wilkesland . Immediately to the west of the mouth of the Holmes Glacier, it marks the western boundary of the entrance to Porpoise Bay and its secondary bay Buhta Lavrova .
The cape was mapped using aerial photographs taken by the United States Navy during Operation Highjump (1946–1947). The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named it after William Speiden [sic!] (1797–1861), paymaster of the Sloop Peacock in the United States Exploring Expedition (1838–1942) under the direction of Charles Wilkes .
Russian scientists named Cape Smirnow ( Russian Мыс Смирнова Mys Smirnowa ) with an almost identical location , so that there is a high probability that a double name must be assumed here. The namesake is not known.
