The Roman Catholic Lourdes Chapel Salgenreute was built on the Rumpelegg parcel next to the Salgenreutertobel in the municipality of Krumbach in the Bregenz district in Vorarlberg . It is dedicated to Our Lady in Lourdes . She is looked after by the Krumbach parish church . The chapel thus belongs to the deanery of Vorderwald-Kleinwalsertal in the diocese of Feldkirch .

The chapel is the only religious building in Salgenreute and its current design is unusual in terms of shape and construction. On the one hand, it is consciously linked to the surrounding historical building forms and the existing building materials and, on the other hand, a separate, modern style is introduced into the chapel building, which can also be described as minimalist .

history

The “Lourdes Chapel” in Salgenreute, which was also privately built by the Wahler family around 1880, was demolished in 2014 because it was dilapidated. The demolition of the old chapel and the construction of the new chapel were carried out by the residents themselves. The new building began in March 2015 and lasted until April 2016. On July 3, 2016, the chapel was inaugurated by the parish chaplain Noby Acharuparambil.

Church building

location

The church building (about 710  m above sea level ) is about 1.5 km as the crow flies in a northerly direction from the center of Krumbach. The chapel can be reached on foot in around three quarters of an hour, by vehicle in a few minutes, but there is no parking space there.

The Weißach flows about 300 m away, to the north of the chapel there is almost 200 meters of altitude down to the river.

Building

The monolithic chapel has a simple design and was designed by the architect Bernardo Bader .

It is a simple wooden structure freestanding on all sides on a natural stone base ( sandstone from Alberschwende ) with a gable height of about 9.5 m and without a bell ridge. The chapel occupies an area of 50 m² and is about 10 m long and 5 m wide ( gross volume : 340 m³). It is a building with an approximately rectangular shape in a west-east orientation.

The outer walls as well as the very steep gable roof are mostly covered with wooden shingles made of larch . Natural light sources are located on both sides of the door and opposite, in the sanctuary, realized through approximately three meter high viewing windows (grazing lights) with clear glass.

The walls are made of wood panels on the massive base. The entrance door is simply designed from burnished brass .

The construction costs for the chapel amounted to almost 100,000 euros, of which the community took over 20,000 euros.

Furnishing

The decor is spartan and the dominance of a cross has been omitted. The wooden rafters of the roof are visible as a design element. The interior is dominated primarily by the height of the room and the light fir wood, with the chancel to the east being separated from the rest of the room by a white lime of the wood and a step. It arises thereby u. a. a new impression of the Lourdes grotto. There are eight benches for three people each in the prayer room.

A statue of the Virgin Mary ( Madonna ) comes from the earlier church and is located on the left part of the chancel. The viewing window is the central part. On the right there is a small ambo with a cross.

Above the door is the bell room, in which the bell of the former chapel is located. This bell can be operated manually from the prayer room.
