The Roman Catholic chapel on Kobel is in the market town of Götzis in the Feldkirch district in Vorarlberg . The chapel (about 426  m above sea level ) is about 1.5 km as the crow flies from the center of Götzis. The chapel dedicated to St. Mary Magdalene belongs to the Götzis parish church in the Rankweil deanery of the Feldkirch diocese . The building from 1797 is a listed building .

Surname

According to Johann Christoph Adelung (1732–1806) in the Grammatical-Critical Dictionary of High German Dialect (Vienna 1811 edition), Kobel means “a word that is only used in common dialects, especially in Upper Germany, where there is an increase as well as the word with it associated concept of a recess or covering ”.

history

The chapel at Kobel in Götzis is west of the state road L190 (formerly B190, which is called "Im Buch" here) on a small hill at the northern entrance to Götzis. The Kobel is a natural bottleneck. The chapel was donated in 1797 by the communities of Götzis, Rankweil and Koblach and built in 1797 as a thank you for the two-time victory against the French in the battle on Kobel in 1796 . The last line of battle was on Kobel in 1945.

The chapel was renovated in 1896, 1901, 1937, 1944, 1983 and 1985/86.

Church building

It is a building with a rectangular basic shape with a retracted apse and south-west / north-east orientation. The chapel is about 5 m wide, 7 m long and about 8 m high. To the northeast (altar) the outer walls are sloping. The simple wooden door in a massive round arched portal made of sandstone with a viewing window and the bell ridge on the gable roof with a square pointed helmet are located to the southwest. The year 1797 is located in the apex of the arched portal.

The gable roof is covered with red roof tiles, the bell ridge with copper sheet. The prayer room has a flat ceiling with cornices. The St. Anna and Arbogast Brotherhood is responsible for maintaining the chapel.

Furnishing

The pews made of fir wood are kept simple, as is the whole chapel. The predominantly blood-red high altar with the picture of Mary with the child and a painted landscape by Götzis underneath dates from 1944. In front of the high altar is a light blue lacquered wooden altar with decorations from the 17th century. An inscription panel tells of the wars, after which the cannonball underneath also dates from 1796.
