The Kapellplatz is a park in Darmstadt .

History and description

The Kapellplatz was named after the old cemetery chapel . This chapel was built in 1601 - at the time of Landgrave Ludwig V - in front of the former city wall. The old cemetery chapel was demolished in 1868.

The second Darmstadt cemetery was located on the site. The cemetery was laid out in 1564 and walled in 1573. The cemetery was used until 1828. In 1866 most of the tombs were removed.

Today Kapellplatz is a public, small park with a few scattered tombstones. The park was designed according to a design by building officer Göbel. The park was designed with mosaic paved paths and trees.

The ruins of the former hall church are located in the southeast corner . The hall church was built in 1868 in neo-Gothic style from quarry stone masonry according to plans by the city architect Eduard Hechler . This church was largely destroyed in an air raid in 1944. The ruin of the destroyed city chapel with its 7 meter high granite cross in the middle is the central Darmstadt memorial for the victims of the Second World War and the National Socialist terror. The memorial was created on September 11, 1954, 10 years after the night of the fire in Darmstadt, as the result of a competition organized by the city of Darmstadt. During the construction, the entrance area of the church ruin was demolished and the outer walls secured and provided with bricks as the upper end. There were also two opposing warning and memorial plaques and a cross with a plaque. The years of the war can be found in the places where the front part of the church was demolished.

The memorial was neglected for many years until it was extended and renovated in 1995. For the 50th anniversary of the end of the war on May 8, 1995, the Darmstadt artist Thomas Duttenhoefer created a memorial consisting of a six-part bronze ensemble, connected by barely visible lines on the floor. The bronze sculpture of the suffering man forms the center. The ensemble also includes a cart, a crooked obelisk, a helmet shape, debris and a relief with the words of the poet Karl Krolow. The ensemble is connected by barely visible lines on the floor.

Soderstrasse runs along the north side of the square . The eastern side of the square is determined by Mühlstrasse . The Ludwig-Georgs-Gymnasium is located on the southern edge of the park . To the west of the park are the Alicen-Eleonoren-Schule and the Alte Pädagog (former Latin school).
