Clifford Scott

Clifford Scott (also Joe Splink , * 21st June 1928 in San Antonio , † 19th April 1993 ) was an American rhythm and blues - and jazz - tenor saxophonist and flutist.

Scott made his first appearances in 1946 at the Keyhole Club in San Antonio and worked in the late 1940s with Jay McShann and Amos Milburn ; from 1952 he played in Roy Milton's band The Solid Senders . The following year he went on a European tour with Lionel Hampton , where recordings were made in France. In 1955 he returned to Roy Milton before moving to Bill Doggett at the end of the year , with whom he stayed until 1962. He was involved in its successful titles Honky Tonk, Hold it, Slow Walk ', Leaps and Bounds, Ram-bunk-shush, Rainbow Riot', Monster Party and Yocky Dock . During his time at Doggett he was a session musician for King Records , including a. on recordings by James Brown ( Please, Please, Please and Try Me 1958), but was also given the opportunity to publish his own instrumental numbers such as Tossed Salad (King 45-5836). He also recorded a first LP under his own name; Andrew Hill , Bobby Bryant and Malachi Favors also played in its first session in 1958 . Further recordings were made in 1960, but they were not published.

After leaving the Doggett band, Clifford took part in sessions with Freddie King and then moved to Los Angeles. In the following years he worked on recordings a. a. of Carmell Jones , Victor Feldman , Marvin Jenkins , Groove Holmes , Lou Rawls , Jimmy Witherspoon and Charles Kynard with. During this time he recorded again under his own name for Pacific Jazz Records on Out Front (1963), with Joe Pass and Les McCann , and Lavender Sax (1964), u. a. with Leroy Vinnegar , Carol Kaye , Charles Kynard and Emil Richards . In the mid-1960s he worked with Onzy Matthews , Della Reese and briefly again with Bill Doggett. At the end of the decade he was a member of the Ray Charles Band ( My Kind of Jazz ).

In the early 1970s, Clifford returned to Texas, where he spent the rest of his life; In 1986 he toured Europe with Wild Bill Davis ( The Zurich Concert ). The last recordings under his own name were made in Texas in the early 1990s for the French label New Rose . In the field of R&B and jazz he was involved in 99 recording sessions between 1949 and 1992, in addition to the aforementioned also with Big Joe Turner , Cora Woods , Little Willie John , Herb Lance , Little Jimmy Scott , Lula Reed and Gil Fuller .
