The chapter house , built in the 14th century, is one of the oldest buildings in Sibiu-Hermannstadt in Transylvania . It is located in the immediate vicinity of the Evangelical parish church and on its western outer wall is part of the inner and first fortification wall of the city.

history

The chapter house has always been a building of the Sibiu church administration. It is closely related to the first documentary mention of Sibiu, when Pope Celestine III. in 1191 confirmed the establishment of the Sibiu Propstei . At this point was later the seat of the originally Catholic, then Evangelical-Lutheran chapter . The current building dates from the 14th century. Sustainable structural interventions took place in the 15th, 16th and 18th centuries.

When the bishop's palace on the Great Ring ( Piața Mare ) was officially confiscated in the years immediately after the Second World War , the chapter house temporarily also housed parts of the Protestant state consistory and bishopric until the bishop's palace was again available to the Protestant church from 1955 and 1956 was standing.

present

Today the building is part of Romania's national cultural heritage list. Currently, the chapter house is home to the Sibiu District Consistory of the Evangelical Church AB and a Viennese coffee house on the ground floor.
