κ Velorum ( Kappa Velorum , κ Vel for short ) is a spectroscopic binary star with an apparent visual brightness of 2.5 mag and an orbital period of about 117 days. The star system lies in the constellation Vela and is about 570  light years away. κ Velorum has the historical proper name Markab (sometimes also written Markeb to distinguish it from other stars of the same name ).

The star is only a few degrees from the southern celestial pole of Mars, so it could be considered the southern polar star of Mars.
