Eta Centauri is a star in the constellation Centaurus . It has an apparent magnitude of +2.31 mag and belongs to the spectral class B2 Ve. Its distance from Earth is approximately 306 light years (94 parsecs ). The star is less than 20 million years old.
Eta Centauri has about 5 to 6 times the radius of the sun and has between 8.5 and 10.5 solar masses . So its mass is very close to the boundary between the mass at which a star becomes a white dwarf and that at which it ends in a supernova . Eta Centauri is a very fast rotating star, its rotation speed at the equator is about 310 kilometers per second, which means that it revolves around itself once in less than a day.
