The Kardauntunnel ( Italian Galleria Cardano ) is the first railway tunnel of the Brenner railway in the direction of Brenner after Bozen . At 3938 m, it is the third longest tunnel on the Brenner Railway north of Bozen , after the Schlern and Pflersch tunnels. The south portal is located in Kardaun near Bozen and the north portal joins the previous Brenner line near Blumau . The tunnel has been in operation since 1998 and therefore puts the winding section in the lower Eisack Valley , which is prone to falling rocks, out of service, as well as several smaller tunnels with too small a cross-section. In contrast to the Schlern Tunnel, there is no slab track in the Kardaun Tunnel . The old route is now used for the Eisack Valley Cycle Route .
