Karel De Schrijver
Karel Reginald De Schrijver (born May 20, 1908 in Antwerp , † September 15, 1992 there ) was a Belgian composer , conductor and musician . He also uses the pseudonyms Jimmy Paresco and Helmut Prago .
Life
He graduated from the Royal Flemish Conservatory in Antwerp and graduated in the subjects of violin with Peter Saenen and Désiré Defauw , piano , counterpoint , fugue with Karel Candael and music history with Albert De Schacht . He then studied for three years privately with Joseph Jongen , then director of the Royal Conservatory in Brussels , in the subjects of composition , instrumentation and aesthetics .
After a further four years of studies at the Rijksuniversiteit Gent , he received his doctorate in general art history and early history of art with a focus on musicology .
In 1929 he became conductor of the mixed choir De Koninklijke Van Dijckkring and in 1931 deputy conductor of the men's choir Lassallekring in Antwerp . In 1935 he became conductor of the Arbeid en Kunst wind orchestra in Antwerp. During the mobilization in 1939 he was commissioned to set up a music corps of the 55th Infantry Regiment in Antwerp. In 1940 he became conductor of the orchestra of the Royal Dutch (-speaking) Schouwburg in Antwerp. From 1941 to 1943 he was director of the Municipal Music Academy in Hasselt , Limburg Province , Belgium .
He was a professor of harmony , counterpoint , fugue , composition and instrumentation .
