Karel Dewetter (born October 2, 1882 in Dobřejovice , † September 12, 1962 in Prague ) was a Czech writer and poet, archivist and editor.

Life

Dewetter claimed to be a descendant of an old French noble family de Wetter d'Altamour , he was not born under this name - he signed some of his older works as de Wetter . After his school education in Týn nad Vltavou and České Budějovice (grammar school) he attended the State Librarian School (Státní knihovnická škola) in Prague. From 1913 he worked as an editor of the publishing house "Šolc a Šimáček", from 1919 to 1941 in the administration as director of the press department and the library and archive of the Ministry of Finance.

Dewetter, who had been a writer since 1913, manifested his patriotic inclinations in several collections of poetry during the First World War . Because of his style, which is reminiscent of “Bohemian Parnassism ”, he is considered a belated successor to Jaroslav Vrchlický . He was also based on Erben and Neruda and woven motifs from folk poetry, folk tales and legends into his works. Dewetter is the author of several short stories and scifi novels for children and young people.

In 1903, at the instigation of Jaroslav Vrchlický, he was accepted into the Association of Czech Writers Máj (Spolek českých spisovatelů-beletristů Máj), he was also a member of the Svatobor Association . His works have been translated into German, English and Serbian. His novella Mrtví žijí from 1919 was filmed in 1992 in Czechoslovakia.

Dewetter also used the following pseudonyms: De Wetter, Karel de Wetter, Karel Vetrovský, Veltrubský.
