Dame Karen Elizabeth Pierce, DCMG (born September 23, 1959 ) is a British diplomat . In February 2020, Pierce was appointed to the post of British Ambassador to the United States .

Career

Karen Pierce attended Penwortham Girls' High School in Lancashire and Girton College in Cambridge (Bachelor of Arts in English, later raised to Master of Arts). In 2012 she earned a Master of Science degree in International Strategies and Diplomacy from the London School of Economics (LSE).

Pierce joined the UK Foreign Office in 1981 . After completing a Japanese course, she was transferred to Tokyo in 1984 as the third secretary . In 1987 she returned to London and joined the Department of Security Policy at the Foreign Office. From 1992 to 1995 she served as the Ambassador's private secretary in Washington, DC . Between 1996 and 2001 she held various positions in the UK Foreign Office: Team Leader for Ukraine , Belarus and Moldova (1996–1997), Deputy Head of the East Adriatic Department ( Balkans ; 1997–1999), Head of the News Department (1999–2000), Head of the EU department (2000–2001) and, at the same time, after the 9/11 attacks, head of the Afghanistan department . From 2003 to 2006 she was the British representative in the Balkans Contact Group .

From 2006 to 2009 Pierce was the Deputy Permanent Representative of the United Kingdom at the United Nations in New York . In this capacity, she chaired the UN Security Council in April 2007 and May 2008 . From 2009 to 2012 she was Director of the South Asia and Afghanistan Division at the UK Foreign Office (British Special Envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan June 2010 to June 2011). From 2012 to 2015 Pierce was Permanent Representative of the United Kingdom to the United Nations in Geneva , as well as to the other international organizations based there, such as B. the World Trade Organization WTO. Pierce was British Ambassador to the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan from May 2015 to February 2016. Until the beginning of 2018 she was employed as Political Director General of the British Foreign Office in London.

Pierce was appointed Permanent Representative of the United Kingdom to the United Nations in New York in March 2018, the first woman to hold that post. In August 2018 and November 2019 she took over the rotating chairmanship of the UN Security Council. In February 2020 she became British Ambassador to the USA.

Private life

Karen Pierce is married to Charles Roxburgh , a senior official in the UK Treasury . The couple have two sons, born in 1991 and 1997.

At the honors on the occasion of the official birthday of Queen Elizabeth II in June 2018, she was raised to the nobility as Dame Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George .
