Karl Heinz Büchel

Karl Heinz Büchel (born December 10, 1931 in Beuel ; † January 11, 2020 ) was a German chemist and member of the Board of Management of Bayer AG .

Büchel studied at the University of Bonn and received his doctorate there in 1958 . He then worked as an assistant and spent five years in research at Royal Dutch Shell. From 1966 he was in the main scientific laboratory of Bayer AG, was head of chemical research on crop protection in Elberfeld from 1971 and headed the main laboratory from 1975. In 1976 he became director and headed central research at Bayer AG. From 1977 to 1994 he was a member of the board and was responsible for research and development. In 1995 he retired.

From 1973 he held lectures on organic chemistry at RWTH Aachen University and was honorary professor there from 1975 . From 1989 he also taught as an honorary professor at the University of Bonn. He was qualified as a professor.

He was a co-developer of the very successful anti-fungal agent clotrimazole (approved as Canesten in Germany from 1973) at Bayer. Its synthesis in 1967 was the first of a whole class of new fungicides and antimycotics , the conazoles . He was also involved in other pesticides, insecticides and anti-fungal agents (Bayer products Mycospor, Bayleton, Baytan, Baycor, Peropal, Goltix, Folicur).

Büchel received several honorary doctorates (including 1985 Bielefeld, TU Munich (1981).) In 2003 he became an honorary citizen of the University of Bonn. In addition, Büchel became a member of the Academy of Sciences and Literature Mainz and, since 1994, of the Leopoldina . In the 2010s he was still a member of the administrative board of the University of Bonn.

Büchel was co-editor of the Houben-Weyl , the manual "Methods of Organic Chemistry" and standard work of chemical literature.

On November 25, 1993 Büchel was awarded the Order of Merit of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class.

Büchel collected postage stamps privately.
