Karl-Heinz Olschewski

Karl-Heinz "Catweazle" Olschewski (* 1943 in Essen ; † January 22, 2013 in Duisburg ) was a German football fan original who supported FC Schalke 04 . While his friends called him "Olly", he was known in fan circles as the "Catweazle".

As a teenager, Karl-Heinz Olschewski experienced the final of the German soccer championship in Hanover in 1958 , which Schalke 04 won 3-0 against Hamburger SV . According to his own statements, he then painted the Schalke station blue and white and was therefore taken into custody for a short time . After the Park Stadium was built, from 1973 onwards he could be found at the Schalke Games in Block 5 of the north curve for decades. He was often seen on television and was interviewed again and again. B. ran for the soccer broadcast . He got his nickname "Catweazle" because of its external resemblance to the protagonist of the British television series of the same name . Particularly noticeable were Olschewski's long hair and shaggy beard, as well as a typical habit with many patches and a drum that he always carried with him, with which he sat on one of the loudspeaker masts and set the mood. He became a formative element of the Schalke fan culture . When FC Schalke 04 moved to the Veltins Arena in 2001 , they no longer felt at home in the new, much more commercial atmosphere. In his words: “All these fashion fuzzis, these armchair users, 'see and be seen' - I laugh myself to pieces. People with bow ties are sitting in the VIP room, I get a 'am Rappel. I can't accept that. "

Karl-Heinz Olschweski earned his living from an antique trade. Most recently he worked in a restaurant in Duisburg. In 2005, several media outlets mistakenly reported his death. Many scared fans sent his wife letters of condolence, his hallway was littered with wreaths of flowers. Olschewski, who himself lived in modest circumstances, auctioned his well-known drum in favor of the Gelsenkirchener Tafel in March 2009. The online auction brought in 1260 euros. Almost four years later, in January 2013, he died at the age of 69 after a long history of kidney disease.
