Karl Marx memorial

The Karl Marx Memorial in Berlin-Stralau is a place of remembrance designed in 1964 for Karl Marx , who lived here as a student from April to late summer 1837.

history

Karl Marx, who studied law at Berlin University from 1836, moved into a room with the fisherman and innkeeper Gottlieb Köhler at Dorfstrasse 11 in April 1837 (since 1900: Alt-Stralau 25 ). He had looked for this accommodation in what was then the rural area around Berlin on the advice of a doctor because his health was in poor health. In a letter to his father, he described the property. "And so I came for the first time through the whole long City the lead after Stralow" In the summer months this stay enjoyed Karl Marx, the peaceful country life, experienced a Stralauer haul , which he was extremely popular and was able to take part in a hunting excursion organized by his host. Marx walked to his lectures in the city center. During these months he devoted himself intensively to his studies and also dealt with the philosophical views of the time, in which he read mainly works by Immanuel Kant , Johann Gottlieb Fichte and Schelling .

In his residential area in Stralau he found like-minded people with whom he had many arguments on long evenings in the "doctor's club", as further reports to his father show:

“Through several get-togethers with friends in Stralow, I ended up in a doctor's club, including some private lecturers and my most intimate of the Berlin friends, Dr. Adolf Friedrich Rutenberg . Here in the quarrel many a reluctant view was revealed, and I chained myself more and more tightly to the current world philosophy, from which I had intended to escape. [...] I had to study law and above all felt an urge to wrestle with philosophy. "

When a cholera epidemic raged in Berlin in the late summer of 1837 , Karl Marx moved from Stralau to the center of Berlin.

After the Karl Marx Year in 1953, a commission commissioned by the SED had already received the order to precisely determine the whereabouts of Karl Marx in Berlin.

Marx profile

In 1962, the GDR government decided to prepare some of Karl Marx's life stations as memorials. For example, on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the GDR , two relief steles made of red sandstone were erected in a landscaped green area on the banks of the Spree near the place where they lived in 1837 . The city district chose an open area on which the residential buildings of Alt-Stralau 17-19, which had been destroyed in World War II , previously stood. It was also in a line of sight to the Soviet memorial in Treptower Park . This from the Berlin sculptor Hans gravel created (1910-1984) monument bears on one of the two half-reliefs a side profile of Marx and a scene of a former garden premises, those active in the local visitors to communism explains. The other relief shows the general strike of German glass workers initiated here in 1901, whose spirit is also traced back to the work of Karl Marx. The 11th Feuerbach thesis by Marx is carved on the back of this illustration : “The philosophers have only interpreted the world in different ways, but what matters is to change it.” The inauguration took place on October 1, 1964 in the presence of the Friedrichshain mayor Hans Höding as well as the youth and party functionary ( FDJ / SED ) Horst Klemm .
