Karl-Theodor "Theo" Sturm (born November 7, 1960 ) is a German mathematician .

Life

After graduating from high school at Platen-Gymnasium Ansbach , Sturm began studying mathematics and physics at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg in 1980 and graduated in 1986 with a diploma in mathematics and the first state examination in mathematics and physics. In 1989 he received his doctorate (on “Disruption of Hunt Processes by Signed Additive Functionals”) with Heinz Bauer and in 1993 his habilitation. Guest stays and various positions took him to Stanford University, the University of Zurich, the University of Bonn and the MPI Leipzig . In 1994 he received a Heisenberg grant from the DFG. Since 1997 he has been researching and teaching as a university professor for mathematics at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn .

From 2002 to 2012 he was deputy speaker and board member of the Collaborative Research Center (SFB) 611 “Singular Phenomena in Mathematical Models” and has been a board member of SFB 1060 “The Mathematics of Emergent Effects” since 2013. From 2007 to 2010 he was Managing Director of the Institute for Applied Mathematics. Since 2012 he has been the coordinator of the “ Hausdorff Center for Mathematicscluster of excellence .

His main research interests are stochastic and geometric analysis . His work on "Analysis on local Dirichlet spaces", 1993–1995, in which he introduced geometric concepts for the investigation of stochastic processes and made methods of elliptic regularity theory accessible for singular operators on abstract spaces, as well as his pioneering work on synthetic barriers for, received special attention the Ricci curvature of metric measurement spaces. The latter emerged in the scientific competition with John Lott and Cédric Villani , which was also mentioned in the laudations for Villanis Fields Medal .

In 2016 he was awarded an ERC Advanced Grant for a research project on "Metric measure spaces and Ricci curvature - analytic, geometric, and probabilistic challenges". For 2020/21 he is the plenary speaker at the 8th European Congress of Mathematicians .

His students include a. Max-Konstatin von Renesse, Hendrik Weber, Nicola Juillet, Anca Bonciocat, Robert Philipowski, Martin Huesmann, Matthias Erbar and Christian Ketterer.

Examples of the numerous postdocs who received important impulses for their research in Sturm's group include: Shin-ichi Ohta, Nicola Gigli , Kazumasa Kuwada, Jan Maas, Fabio Cavalletti and Sebastian Andres.
