The Karl-Volkert-Hof is a listed public housing in the 16th Viennese district Ottakring . It was built between 1926 and 1927 according to plans by the architects Franz Schacherl and Franz Schuster and comprises 226 apartments.

location

The Karl-Volkert-Hof is located in the Viennese cadastral community Ottakring . The site of the Ottakringer brewery is in the immediate vicinity . The communal housing comprises two courtyards, the larger of the two courtyards having a rectangular floor plan. In the area of the main courtyard, the Karl-Volkert-Hof is limited to the west by Klausgasse and to the east by Kreitnergasse. In the south, the community housing is separated from Hasnerstrasse by residential buildings. In the north, the Karl-Volkert-Hof is continued along Kreitnergasse with an attached, slightly L-shaped component that extends to Thaliastraße.

History and structure

The Karl-Volkert-Hof is a monumental, four-story, two-courtyard-wide community building. It has an eight-axis facade on Thaliastraße and a gray facade on Kreitnergasse. The architects Schacherl and Schuster mainly used horizontal plaster layers and two to three-sash windows as design elements. The facade on Kreitnergasse also has flat four-storey bay windows, which were additionally accentuated by a darker plaster color. As an additional design element, the community building has a base zone set off by rough concrete, which was stepped through the slope of the courtyard. The rough concrete zone is interrupted by banded clinker cladding in the area of the two high entrance portals.

Inside the community building is the so-called “Volkert Monument”, which was created in 1930 by the sculptor Siegfried Bauer . The monument is a portrait bust on a square pillar, which was erected in honor of the social democratic politician Karl Volkert . The municipal housing was also named after Volkert, with the naming on March 24, 1931. There is also a memorial plaque in the residential complex to commemorate him. In 1934 the Karl Volkert monument was removed, and in 1935 the inscription on the building was dismantled. After the Second World War, however, the original condition was restored.

During the years 1993 to 1995 the Karl-Volkert-Hof was renovated, with the plinth renovation and the restoration of the facade being carried out in the course of the work. Windows, doors and roofing were also renewed, with 23 new apartments in the attic and a new playground being built in the course of the work. The renovation costs amounted to around 8.3 million euros.
