Karl Arno Pfeiff

Karl Arno Pfeiff (* 1909 in Ober Leschen near Sprottau (Silesia) ; † 1997 ) was a German classical archaeologist and classical philologist .

Pfeiff studied Classical Archeology and Classical Philology and received his doctorate in 1939 at the University of Frankfurt under Ernst Langlotz with a dissertation The Transformation of the Apollo Image in Greek Vessel Painting up to the year 460 . In 1940/1941 he received a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute , which he was unable to take due to the war. From 1942 to 1943 he was an assistant at the Athens Department of the German Archaeological Institute . After the war he was a teacher at the Beethoven High School in Bonn .

In addition to a book on the iconography of Apollo , he stood out primarily with translations of works by Aeschylus , Sophocles , Pindars and the Homeric Hymns .
