Karl Bernhard Wessely , also Carl Bernhard Wessely (born September 1, 1768 in Berlin , † July 11, 1826 in Potsdam ), was a German composer . Wessely was the conductor and court music director of Prince Heinrich of Prussia in Rheinsberg . He composed a. a. the funeral cantata on the death of Moses Mendelssohn .

life and work

Wessely was a pupil of JA Schulz , became music director at the Royal National Theater in Berlin in 1788, and court music director in Rheinsberg in 1796. After the prince's death, he largely gave up his musical career and became a low-ranking civil servant in Berlin and later in Potsdam, where he founded an association for classical music, which he directed until his death. He was a member of the Berlin Masonic Lodge "Friedrich Wilhelm for Crowned Justice".

Karl Bernhard Wessely composed a. a. several operas, ballet and drama music, songs, funeral cantatas and string quartets. He was also active as a musicological writer and provided corresponding magazine articles, especially for the Archiv der Zeit and the Allgemeine Musik-Zeitung .
