Carl Christian von Sommerfeldt

Carl Christian von Sommerfeldt , modernized Karl Christian von Sommerfeld , (* October 15, 1650 , † October 15, 1711 in Hameln ) was a Braunschweig-Lüneburg general field master, governor of Hameln and colonel on foot via the electoral guard.

Life

He came from the German aristocratic Sommerfeldt family , who traditionally wrote themselves with -dt at the end, but others usually only wrote -d. The family was u. a. based in the Saxon-Thuringian area. The manor Großvargula in the Erfurt area was one of their most important possessions . This estate was located in the middle of the Electoral Mainz office of Vargula, but was a fief of the Wettins from time immemorial and was awarded by the respective Elector of Saxony until 1657 . Through the will of Elector Johann Georg I of Saxony, a. a. also the Saxon-Weissenfels secondary school , which now gave the fiefdom over Großvargula. During this time, Carl Christian von Sommerfeldt was active, whose ancestors had received the Großvargula manor from the Lords of Creutzburg. Due to the remote and special location, they achieved the conversion from an official manor belonging to the Langensalza office into a manor based on writing, which was directly subordinate to the lordly chancellery.

Like many of his family members, Carl Christian von Sommerfeldt embarked on a military career, especially since his father himself had achieved the rank of general. In order to secure himself and his family financially, in 1695 he bought half of his brother Caspar Friedrich von Sommerfeldt's inheritance from his father's estate, Großvargula. At this time he was already major general in the service of Braunschweig-Lüneburg.

After his death in 1711 - he died on his 61st birthday - he left behind the two sons Georg Friedrich and Ernst Carl von Sommerfeldt from his marriage to Hedwig von Berlepsch († May 10, 1711) from the Uxleben family , of whom ultimately the older one took over his father's estate and built the baroque manor house that still exists there in 1728/29.
