Karl Eduard Schneweis
Karl Eduard Schneweis (born April 24, 1925 in Koblenz ; † February 7, 2014 ) was a German doctor and virologist . He was the first to differentiate and detect two different types of herpes simplex virus .
After studying medicine in Bonn and Göttingen , Schneweis was an assistant at the Hanover Medical Examination Office , the Hamburg Hygiene Institute , the Max Planck Institute for Cell Physiology (Tissue Engineering Department ) in Berlin-Dahlem and the Göttingen Medical Examination Office. From 1959 he set up his own virological department with Henning Brandis at the Hygiene Institute of the University of Göttingen . Here he researched the different antigenetic properties of the herpes simplex virus (HSV) and was able to prove in 1962 that there are two different virus species that can also be assigned to the different disease patterns of herpes simplex .
In 1962 he qualified as a professor in medical microbiology. In 1968 he followed Brandis to Bonn, where he again set up a new virology department. In 1969 he did a research stay with André Nahmias at Emory University in Atlanta , where he characterized other type-specific surface antigens of HSV-1 and HSV-2. In Bonn, he again turned to the clinical significance of HSV, including rubella virus , cytomegalovirus and hepatitis diagnostics. From 1978 he works within the framework of a DFG focus on persistent virus infections and HSV in particular.
In 1985 he set up a special laboratory for diagnosing HIV infections and evaluating HIV inactivation methods for blood products for the treatment of haemophilia patients in Bonn. Schneweis retired in 1992 and continued to work in the context of HIV resistance assessment.
